The Pennines Golf Trail

Wonderful golf in the foothills of the Pennines

The backbone of England, stretching from Derbyshire in the heart of the nation to the Scottish borders in the north, is characterised by stunning views and wild heather-clad moorland in a natural, unspoiled countryside setting.

Often considered to be the most scenic part of England, the Pennines have long attracted visitors eager the soak up their relaxing qualities and they flock in their thousands to walk The Pennine Way, celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015, or to take part in numerous outdoor leisure pursuits.

It is not surprising that golf courses on the flanks of the Pennines are sought after. They offer good quality, varied challenges and are a joy to play.

The Pennines Golf Trail showcases four scenic courses in the foothills of the mountain spine, aiming to attract visitors from home and abroad who appreciate scenic beauty as they line up their putts.

Straddling both sides of the Pennines in Lancashire and Yorkshire, the trail has been designed so visitors can choose to play all the courses over a week, while enjoying some of the legendary northern hospitality along with some fine local cuisine.

The four clubs making up the group are Clitheroe GC, Huddersfield GC, Manchester GC and Pleasington GC.

The cluster provides great value for money, as well as a rich variety of golfing experiences.

Clitheroe Golf Club, situated in the beautiful Ribble Valley just south of the popular market town is relatively flat while Woodsome Hall, near Huddersfield, clings to a hillside providing an excellent test of skill for golfers of all levels with accuracy and thought being the key to success.

Nearby Huddersfield Golf Club, often known as Fixby, is steeped in history. Its championship course has staged many top events, and is recognised in Golf Monthly’s Top 200.

The Manchester Golf Club lies close to the city but this Colt designed, championship course provides extensive views of the West Pennines, and is predominantly moorland in character with heathland and parkland features.

Pleasington, near Blackburn, has a wonderful variety of holes set in a combination of mature parkland and natural heathland comprising heather and wonderful turf. All the greens have been extensively drained and provide year round playability.
